The wreath pictured here is a mini wreath with a 5 inch diameter. You can make rag wreaths as large or small as you like, but smaller wreaths require less fabric and if you are using scraps you will not have large quantities, so I like to make smaller wreaths. This fabric is blue with white stripes and a white ribbon accent. Fabric cut in various lengths giving it a rustic, shabby chic look.

Using left over Fabric Scraps

It is very easy to make a rag wreath at home out of any left over fabric scraps you have around the house. First you want to cut strips of your fabric into pieces long enough to tie around your wreath base. I usually use about 6 inches or so, but you can do longer or shorter depending on how large you want your final wreath to appear. You can also rip the pieces of fabric to give it more distressed edges, but if it is the type of material that will fray when cut, this will happen naturally as you assemble your wreath. Then just tie the fabric around any circular wreath base being sure to hide whatever is underneath. You can use old picture frames, wire forms or anything that you have that is round to tie your fabric around. This is a great project for recycling large plastic lids, simply cut the center out of the lid to create a hollow circular base.

An easy way to make holiday decorations is to create mini rag wreaths to use around the house with holiday colors. Red & Green for Christmas, Red, White & Blue for the fourth of July. For Halloween use black and orange fabric scraps. You can combine as many fabrics and colors as you like. The mini rag wreath shown in the photo uses a ton of different color fabrics. It looks very bright and cheerful.
