I have had acid reflux for the last 15 years. I wanted to share some of the acid reflux prevention tips I have used over the years to help to reduce the symptoms of Acid Reflux. These are not intended to be medical advice, if you have frequent heartburn or think you may be suffering from acid reflux be sure to see your doctor. You can use an acid reducing medicine, such as Nexium or Omeprazole when taken as directed, however these tips may help also:

  1. Don’t eat foods that irritate you – keep a “food diary” and make a note of what you have eaten when you have particularly bad acid problems and what foods caused the problem so you know what to avoid.
  2. Don’t eat too close to bed time. You should eat at least 2 hours prior to going to bed.
  3. Sleep with the pillow elevating your head so acid does not escape your stomach.
  4. Don’t eat lying down or curled up on the couch. You can also try to stand up and eat or sit up straight so that food can easily travel down the esophagus.
  5. Avoid highly acidic foods like pineapple, lemonade, and foods that produce acid like processed foods and those high in sugar.
  6. Avoid carbonated beverages like soda.
  7. Foods with heavy visible seasoning or dry herbs tends to bother me.
  8. Check with your doctor to be tested for bacteria or other stomach infections to make sure your problem is acid reflux
  9. Drink milk while eating which can act as an antacid. Bananas can also help with acid reduction.
  10. Drink plenty of water while eating to flush foods down and help with digestion.
  11. Don’t over-stuff yourself or over-eat.
  12. Losing weight may also help to reduce symptoms.
