DIY Gnome Ornament

Gnomies are very popular this season for Christmas. I saw two Christmas trees have ornaments with handmade gnome ornaments. Here is a tutorial on how to make a gnome ornament out of yarn or stuffing:

Materials needed:

  • Yarn in the color of your choice
  • Scissors
  • Polyfil stuffing
  • Glue gun
  • Pom pom maker (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Start by making the body of the gnome. To do this, wrap the yarn around your hand (or a book, if you prefer) about 50 times. Carefully slide the loops off of your hand and tie a piece of yarn tightly around the center to secure the loops. This will be the base of the gnome’s body.
  2. Cut the loops on either side of the tied yarn to create the “beard” of the gnome. Trim the beard so that it is even and has a desired length.
  3. Make the hat for the gnome. To do this, wrap the yarn around the pom pom maker (or a book) until it is about half full. Close the pom pom maker and tie a piece of yarn tightly around the center to secure the yarn. Cut the loops on either side of the tied yarn to create the brim of the hat.
  4. Stuff the body of the gnome with polyfill stuffing until it is firm.
  5. Using the glue gun, attach the hat to the top of the gnome’s head.
  6. To make the nose, take a small piece of yarn and wrap it around your finger a few times. Tie a knot in the center and trim the ends to create the desired shape. Glue the nose onto the front of the gnome’s face.
  7. Your gnome ornament is now complete! You can hang it on your tree or display it as a decoration in your home.

I hope this tutorial helps you make your own gnome ornament out of yarn!

Gnomes are small, typically stout, creatures that are often depicted in European folklore and children’s stories as having pointed hats and beards, and living underground or in gardens. They are sometimes depicted as mischievous or greedy, but are generally portrayed as being hardworking and industrious. In modern times, gnomes are often depicted as cute and lovable characters, and are popular in garden decorations and as toys. Some people believe that gnomes bring good luck and protect gardens, while others consider them to be purely fictional characters.

This gnome uses a simple paper cone, cotton ball and puff nose.
